My neighbor's kid asked me why I always wear my old leather apron.

He said his dad told him 'real smiths feel the heat through their gear, it keeps you sharp'. I've been using a modern Kevlar one for two years. Now I'm second guessing every time I spark up the forge. Anyone else have a piece of gear they switched from that they regret?

I finally decided the 'flat earth' thing was a waste of time after a 3-hour argument with my cousin.

Just realized my mentor was right about using a torque wrench on every lug nut

He told me that back in '08, and I thought it was overkill until I warped a rotor on a customer's Civic last month. Now I see it's the only way to be sure you're not creating a bigger problem down the line. How many of you actually torque every wheel, or do you still go by feel sometimes?

My foreman in Denver told me to always use a 3/8 inch joint for exterior walls, but I switched to a 1/2 inch after a few harsh winters.

The bigger joint holds up way better to the freeze-thaw cycles out here. Anyone else adjust their specs for their local climate?

TIL my friend's board game collection went from a single shelf to a whole room in under a year

I went over to his place last weekend and legit didn't recognize the basement. A year ago, it was just a couch, a TV, and one IKEA Kallax with maybe 15 games. Now? The entire back wall is floor-to-ceiling shelves, packed. He's got like 300 games, organized by player count and weight. The change happened after he joined a local game design group and started playtesting every week. He said, 'Once you start seeing how the mechanics fit together, you just want to experience all of them.' The wild part is he built the shelves himself over a single weekend in March. Has anyone else had a friend's hobby just completely explode like that? What kicked it off for them?

Pegboards are a game changer for real. I put one up for my most used hand tools and it cut my project time in half, no joke. Never hunting for a tape measure or a flathead again. That feeling when you just grab what you need and get to work is the best.

Had a nav system decide it was in the wrong hemisphere yesterday

That's a scary situation, but I have to push back on the idea it's always a system failure. Sometimes the unit is getting correct data we just don't understand. @jesseb20 mentioned bad GPS data, but what if the signal was actually fine and the unit was reporting a legit, if weird, backup location from a system test? Pilots are quick to blame the tech, but we should consider if there was any odd atmospheric interference or a temporary satellite glitch that resolved itself. Maybe the full reboot was needed, but it might have just been waiting for a clearer signal lock. Have you checked all the possible external factors before calling it a total unit failure?

Everyone says to add fiber mesh to every slab, but I've seen more cracks with it when the subgrade prep is sloppy.

My buddy tried to skip proper compaction on his patio slab, thinking the fibers would save it. The whole thing shifted and cracked within a season. It really is all about that base.

I finally saw the new regional maintenance hangar in Boise and the layout is a mess

Totally feel that, the location thing is such a pain. Had a meeting out there once and spent more time in the car than in the actual room. Makes you wonder who planned that whole setup. The whole day just gets eaten up by pointless travel. Really kills any chance of getting other stuff done. Just a badly designed situation all around.
