Appreciation post: A stubborn rhododendron in my client's yard in Bellingham made me rethink fertilizer

Oh man, that hits home. I had a blueberry patch that just would not thrive, kept throwing standard acidic fertilizer at it. Turns out the previous owner had limed the whole garden bed for tomatoes years ago and the pH was totally wrecked for blueberries. Felt like such a dummy, had to basically replace the topsoil. Plants really do tell you when you're getting it wrong.

Update from a job in a Tacoma office building

The power stretcher is a great tool but it's not a magic wand. I've definitely been in spots where the room layout just laughs at you for trying to use it. My own rule is if I'm fighting the tool more than the carpet, it's time for the kicker. My boss caught me doing that once too and just shook his head. He said my method looked like a happy accident, not skill.

I just saw a poll that said most comic fans only read from the big two publishers

Yeah and it's not just reach, it's about what's easy to find. The big two are in every bookstore and grocery store, you don't have to hunt for them. Most people just grab what's right in front of them, they don't go looking for indie shops or online stuff. So the poll is probably just showing what's most available, not what's actually good.

I almost lost a $15,000 job because I didn't check a reference

Honestly thought that was overkill but you're right, it's just smart damage control.

My uncle insisted I should never use water on a hot creosote fire, even a small one.

Wait, so Piper, when you say you've doused small flare-ups, how exactly did you do it? Did you just toss a cup of water up the flue, or use a spray bottle? I'm trying to picture the method that didn't cause a problem for you.
