Why does nobody talk about how long it takes to actually learn a new skill well enough to be useful?
I started learning to play the guitar about 6 months ago, and I'm just now getting to the point where I can play a full song without messing up. I'm curious how long it took other people to feel like they were decent at something new, whether it was a language, a sport, or a hobby.
Six months to play one song is actually right on track, most people just quit before that point. The hard part is sticking with it through the boring beginner stage when you suck and nothing sounds right. Once you push past that, and you're right there, things speed up a lot.
