Swapped a 240mm rad for a 140mm and my temps got better, somehow

I had a 240mm AIO up front in my Meshify C for 18 months and my Ryzen 7 5800X always sat around 82C under load. I switched to a single 140mm Noctua tower cooler, the NH-U14S, because I wanted to use the front intake for the GPU. Now it tops out at 74C in the same Corsair 4000D case, mostly because the rear exhaust actually gets airflow instead of fighting the radiator. Has anyone else seen a smaller cooler outperform a bigger one just from better case airflow routing?
