Shoutout to the guy who told me my punties were too thick

I was at a studio in Austin last month, working on a small vase. Another glassblower, this older guy named Carl, watched me for a minute. He just said, 'Kid, your punties look like tree trunks. You're fighting the piece.' I was using punties about the size of a pencil. He told me to try ones half that thick, like a coffee stirrer. I switched over, and wow. The piece balanced way easier. I wasn't wrestling it so much. It felt lighter on the pipe. My control got better almost right away. Has anyone else had a simple tool change make that big a difference?

I mixed a batch of mortar with a bit of dish soap in it on a dare.

It was for a garden wall in my own yard, and the soap made it spread like butter but killed the bond strength. The whole thing started leaning after two days of rain. Anyone know a real way to get that smooth workability without wrecking the hold?

I picked the button, and now it's pinned to my corkboard as a $0 reminder to always check the payment terms before starting. Anyone else get offered truly bizarre 'payment' that made you laugh and cry at the same time?

Appreciation post: I tried stacking 200 shots of the Orion Nebula from my backyard

I used my old DSLR and a basic star tracker, expecting a fuzzy mess. Instead, the stacked image showed way more detail than I thought possible, especially in the faint outer gas clouds. It took about 3 hours of total exposure time and a lot of patience with the free software. Has anyone else been surprised by what you can pull out of a ton of short exposures?

Got called out on my riser gating setup last week

I was pouring a set of bronze bushings, using a single 1/2-inch riser on each. A guy from the next bay over, Mike, walked by and said 'You're gonna get shrinkage with that, feed it from the side.' I argued my way was fine, but he showed me a photo on his phone of a similar part he did with a side gate that came out perfect. So I tried it his way on the next pour. The part cooled way more even and the finish was better. Anyone else had a veteran worker change their mind on something basic?

My sourdough starter went from a sad puddle to a bubbly beast in just 48 hours

I was ready to throw it out. For a solid week, my starter was just a gray, watery mess that smelled like old gym socks. I was feeding it with the same organic rye flour from the co-op every day, and nothing. Then, two days ago, I moved it from the back of my cool counter to on top of my fridge, which is way warmer. I also switched to using bottled water instead of tap. The difference is INSANE. It doubled in size overnight and now has those perfect bubbles you see in pictures. It actually smells sweet and yeasty, like beer. I feel like I unlocked a secret level. Has anyone else had a starter just decide to work after a simple location and water change?

Talking to my neighbor about her old oak table made me see grain filler differently

She's not a finisher, just a regular person who loves her furniture. She said the table felt 'warm and solid' under her hands, not just smooth. I realized I've been focusing so much on a perfect, glassy surface that I was sanding out all the character. That little bit of open grain she could feel was part of the story for her. Has anyone else had a client or friend point out something they liked that went against a 'perfect' finish?

My old boss told me to never use a bold pattern in a small room, but I just did.

He said it would make the space feel closed in and busy, so for years I stuck to safe, solid colors. Last month, a client in Denver really wanted a big floral print for her tiny bathroom, and I went for it. We used a single accent wall with the pattern and kept everything else simple and light. The room actually feels bigger now because the pattern draws your eye in and adds depth. Has anyone else found that breaking the 'small room, small pattern' rule can work?

Showerthought: I found a 1920s dresser in a ditch last month and the finish was a total mess

I was driving home from a job in Springfield and saw this old dresser just sitting by the road. It was solid oak but someone had painted it with about three thick coats of house paint. I took it home, thinking it would be a quick strip job. Wrong. Under the paint was this weird, cracked shellac that turned to sticky goo the second my chemical stripper touched it. I had to switch to a cabinet scraper and work for hours, inch by inch. The wood underneath was beautiful but stained in spots. I ended up using a two-part wood bleach on the dark stains, which was nerve-wracking. Now I'm ready to start the new finish, but I'm stuck on whether to use a traditional oil varnish or a modern water-based topcoat for something this old. Has anyone else had to rescue a piece with a finish that just completely fell apart?
