Compared a Kodak Brownie to my grandpa's Polaroid for scanning his 1956 vacation slides, and the cheap one won
My grandpa left me two boxes of slides from a trip to Yellowstone in 1956, and I spent three weekends last month trying to get them into my computer. First I used his old Polaroid slide adapter from the 60s, the kind with the metal frame, and it took 45 minutes just to get 12 slides scanned because the thing kept jamming. Then my neighbor lent me a simple Kodak Brownie slide holder that cost him $6 at a flea market, and I got through all 200 slides in one evening with way less cussing. The difference was the Brownie just slides them through with no springs or clips to fight with, so nothing ever got stuck or scratched. The Polaroid gave me sharper colors, but it also grabbed the film and left a scratch across a picture of my grandma at Old Faithful. Has anyone else noticed that the cheap plastic stuff from back then holds up better than the fancy metal gear?
The plastic won because it's simple, not because old stuff was built better. Those fancy metal adapters had springs and tight clips that were made for a specific projector, so using them for scanning was always gonna be a pain. Sounds like the Brownie just happened to fit your setup, and a $6 holder that doesn't scratch your grandma's face is the right call every time.
