Used to buy the paper Eurail pass at the station in Munich, switched to the app and it was night and day
Back in 2016 I stood in a 40 minute line at Munich Hauptbahnhof to activate a paper pass, but last month I just tapped a button on my phone and walked straight onto the platform. The app also let me see seat reservations in real time, which saved me from getting kicked out of a full car on the way to Salzburg. Does anyone else feel weirdly nostalgic for the paper pass even though the digital one is clearly less hassle?
That nostalgia probably comes from the paper pass being a souvenir of the trip itself. The app is just a tool you use and forget about. I still have my old passes in a drawer and each one brings back memories of the trip. The digital pass leaves nothing behind, which is why it feels a bit empty even when it works better. I started keeping a small travel journal with the route and dates so I still have something to hold onto.
