That Saturday where my offer got rejected 3 times in one day

I was looking at a house in Austin that seemed perfect, 3 bedrooms with a big yard. First offer got beat by cash, second one they countered way too high, third one I just walked away from. Real estate agent told me “this market is brutal right now, you gotta move faster.” Has anyone else had a day where nothing goes right with offers?

Had a foreman in Austin yell at me for using too much mud on my first taper job

I was fresh off the apprenticeship, maybe 2 months in. This old foreman, Rick, watched me load up my first butt joint. He walked over, grabbed my hawk, and dumped half the mud back in the bucket. Told me "You're not buttering bread, kid." I was using too much mud on the taper. It was slowing me down and making extra sanding. He showed me a lighter hand with the knife, just a thin coat. Has anyone else had a boss save them from bad habits early on?

Dropped by the local library's basement sale and spotted a working Apple IIe from 1983

They had it hooked up to a tiny monochrome monitor running some old math game, and the thing booted up in under 10 seconds. Has anyone else seen one of these still chugging along in the wild, or do I just hang out in the wrong places?

Vent: Tried a 5/8 carbide end mill on aluminum and got a bird's nest from hell

I was running a job in Cleveland last Tuesday. Simple pocket on 6061. Grabbed a 5/8 three-flute carbide end mill. Figured I could push the feed rate a little. Big mistake. About 10 minutes in the chips just stopped breaking. Wound up into this massive tangled mess around the holder. Took me 20 minutes to cut it off with snips. Part got thrown off by the vibration too. Scrapped the whole thing. Learned my lesson on chip evacuation. You guys run dedicated chip breakers for aluminum or just stick to two-flute?

Vent: Wasted 3 hours on a bad crimper that stripped my coax instead of clamping

Picked up a cheap crimper from a discount tool bin last week. Looked fine but after about 10 crimps it started chewing up the connector ends. Ended up redoing 8 terminations and still had signal loss on two of them. Lost a whole afternoon and had to borrow a buddy's Klein to finish. Anyone else have a tool that just wrecked your day like that?

Saw this hack job at a kitchen remodel last Tuesday

I was helping a buddy with a cabinet install and the previous guy had shimmed every single upper cabinet with these random door shims stacked 3 or 4 high. He even used a piece of cardboard on one side to level it. I mean, we all need to level stuff, but stacking flimsy shims like that just creates a wobbly mess over time. After 6 months of settling they were all gonna sag and crack the face frame. Why do people go for quick cheap fixes instead of just cutting a proper wedge shim or using a leveling system from the start? Has anyone else walked into a job and had to rip out someone else's lazy shim job before you could even start?

TIL using a simple color key for my monthly spread actually made me stick with bullet journaling after 3 failed attempts in 2020.

I used to spend hours on fancy layouts and stickers but realized a 4-color dot system for tasks, events, notes, and priorities cut my setup time to 10 minutes flat - has anyone else found that simpler works better long term?

Had to choose between a $500 Miata with rust or a $700 running Civic with a salvage title

I went with the Miata because I figured I could patch the floor pans myself with some sheet metal and a Harbor Freight welder. Three months later and I'm still finding rust in places I didn't know existed, but the thing handles like a dream on back roads. Any of you guys ever tackle rust repair on a tight budget and actually finish it?

Spent 4 hours chasing a ghost in the WXI system on a King Air 200 today

Turned out to be a chafed wire behind the panel that I overlooked on the first three checks because the insulation was pin-hole sized. Has anyone else had a tiny wire fault take way longer than it should to find?

Had to pick between a salamander or a blow torch for finishing crème brûlée

I went with the torch because it's cheaper and I can use it for searing peppers too. First batch came out great, but has anyone else had trouble getting an even layer without burning the sugar in spots?

PSA: my attempt to paint over old wallpaper went horribly wrong

@william917 is right about steaming it off, but nobody mentioned checking if your wallpaper is vinyl coated. I had the exact same mess in my 1950s house in Oregon - scored and steamed like crazy, still wouldn't budge. Turned out the top layer was vinyl, so the steam couldn't get through to loosen the glue underneath. Had to use a chemical stripper just to break through that plastic coating before the paper would finally come off. Check yours by scratching an inconspicuous spot with a knife - if the surface resists tearing and feels plasticy, that's your problem.
