Had to choose between a $500 Miata with rust or a $700 running Civic with a salvage title

I went with the Miata because I figured I could patch the floor pans myself with some sheet metal and a Harbor Freight welder. Three months later and I'm still finding rust in places I didn't know existed, but the thing handles like a dream on back roads. Any of you guys ever tackle rust repair on a tight budget and actually finish it?

I'll be honest, I used to be one of those people who said "just patch it and send it" but after trying to fix a rusted out sucker on my own I totally get why people give up. The cancer just keeps spreading under the paint, no matter how much sheet metal you weld in. The Miata sounds way more fun to drive though, especially if you can get the rust under control before it turns into Flintstone car territory.
