TIL that proofing bread in a cold oven takes 4 times as long

I stuck my dough in the unheated oven to rise and it took almost 5 hours before it doubled. Has anyone else had this happen or was my yeast just dead?

Had the worst week of my career on a boiler retrofit in Pittsburgh last month

Three days straight of fighting with old rivets that wouldn't budge and then the new tube sheet showed up with the holes drilled a quarter inch off. Anyone else deal with replacement parts that just don't fit right?

Old timer told me to skip mesh tape on corners, now I got cracks everywhere

Was talking to this guy at the supply house last month, said he's been doing drywall since the 80s. He swore paper tape is all you need and mesh is a waste of money for inside corners. So I tried it on a bedroom job in Phoenix. Two weeks later, the corner where the hallway meets the living room has a hairline crack running down it. Shoulda stuck with mesh. Anyone else had old school advice backfire like this?

Just realized my code comments were way too vague after a code review in Portland last week

I've been coding for about 6 months and always thought my comments were fine. Then during a group code review at a meetup in Portland, this guy pointed out that my comment '// loops through data' told him nothing useful. He showed me how writing comments like '// gets all users who signed up in March 2023 and filters out admins' actually helps future me understand what I was thinking. Has anyone else had a code review totally change how they comment?

Overheard a guy at the paint shop saying primers are just a scam

He was dead serious too, but after 20 years in the business I've seen too many peel jobs come back within six months to agree, anyone else run into customers who skip primer and blame you when it flakes off?

Ran into a homeowner who changed how I think about creosote treatments

Had a job last Tuesday in a house built in 1952. Owner said he'd used a chemical log every month for 10 years. I told him those logs don't replace a proper sweep, but he pushed back. He pulled out a folder with every service record and photo from the last decade. Made me realize I've been too quick to dismiss customers who try these products themselves. Has anyone else had a homeowner teach them something unexpected about maintenance habits?

Just realized my old prop master's trick for fake glass doesn't work anymore

Back in 2015, we'd make breakable windows for fight scenes by scoring real glass with a carbide cutter and baking it. Tried it last month on a pane from a local hardware store and it just shattered into dangerous shards. Turns out the tempering process changed, so that old method is totally unsafe now. Has anyone found a reliable, cheap alternative for creating safe breakaway panes?

I just realized I've been teaching my friends the rules to Catan wrong for like 3 years, and my buddy's girlfriend finally called me out on it.

She pointed to the rulebook and said 'it says right here you get a resource for EACH settlement on a hex, not just one total,' and my whole game group just stared at me.

Shoutout to the crew that switched from a 4-inch to a 6-inch cutterhead on our old ladder dredge

We were working a sand bar on the Ohio River, pulling maybe 80 cubic yards an hour and fighting constant clogs. The boss brought in a new 6-inch head about three months back. The first week was rough, adjusting the swing speed and pump pressure. Now we're clearing over 120 yards an hour with half the downtime. Has anyone else seen a jump like that just from a cutterhead change?

Yeah but you gotta watch the fine print on that. Usually when you call in and get a discount, they make you sign a new contract for like 12 or 24 months. So if you try to switch providers later or move, you might get hit with an early termination fee that eats up all that savings. A buddy of mine saved $25 a month on his TV package but didn't realize they locked him into a two year term with a $200 penalty for leaving early. Then he had to move for work six months in and it cost him more than he saved. So just make sure you ask if there's a contract attached before you agree to anything.
