Just counted the pages in my first full rebind and the number shocked me

Wait, you thought it was just the cover? The sewing is the whole job. That's like saying building a house is mostly about picking the paint color. My hand cramps just thinking about 552 pages.

Been seeing a lot of younger cooks just blast their pans on high heat from the start. It's a different kind of cooking now.

My old head chef in Boston would lose his mind if he saw a cold pan hit a high burner. He drilled the low and slow warm up into us for years. I tried the high heat method on some scallops last week and the smoke alarm had a different opinion. There's something to be said for both ways, but my kitchen fan just isn't up for the new school approach.

Spent $80 on a 'quick dry' grain filler that took 3 days to set, messed up my whole week's schedule.

Remember my buddy bought those "quick dry" pants for a hike. He got caught in a light drizzle and they soaked through like a sponge, took hours to dry. He was complaining about it for days, felt totally lied to by the tag. Your post, @vale19, made me think of him instantly. That marketing is such a joke sometimes.

Bought a cheap tool setter that was off by 0.002 right out of the box

Remember my buddy Dave got burned by a similar cheap setter last year. He was setting up a new job and scraped a whole fixture plate because his Z was off by a few thou. The lesson was to always check it against a gauge block or a known tool first, even if it's new. He ended up getting a used brand name one off a forum and it's been solid. That initial trust in the box is a killer.

Shoutout to the weird glue tip I thought was a joke

My uncle tried restoring an old ledger from his shop, just used regular book glue. Held up fine for ten years until he gave it away. I get what lewis.diana is saying about a base layer, but sometimes I wonder if we overcomplicate simple fixes. That bible was probably gonna be fine with a good flexible PVA, the wheat paste just made you feel better about it. Not every old thing needs a museum treatment.
