Stop trusting water sources on your GPS without double checking

Was hiking the Susquehannock Trail System in Pennsylvania last June and my GPS showed a creek at mile 12. Got there and it was completely dry, just a muddy ditch. Three other groups I passed on the way out had the same problem and were rationing their bottles. The issue is that these maps don't update seasonally, especially in drought years, so a spring that flowed last fall might be gone by July. Has anyone else gotten burned by a dry water source on a long stretch that should have had reliable flow?

My $200 Star Tracker lasted exactly 3 clear nights before the motor died

I saved up for months to buy a star tracker for my DSLR so I could get those long exposure shots of the Milky Way. First night was amazing, got some real nice images of the Lagoon Nebula. Second night the tracking started drifting after about 30 minutes. Third night the motor just hummed and wouldn't move at all. Cost $200 and now it's a paperweight on my desk. Has anyone had any luck with those cheap trackers on Amazon or should I just save for a proper Sky-Watcher?

Can we talk about thermal paste on old laptops?

For years I just used whatever cheap thermal paste came with a cooler or I found at a local shop. Then a guy on a YouTube comment section said I was probably using stuff that was 5 years old and dried out. He pointed me to a tube of Arctic MX-4 that cost me $8 and showed me how much difference a fresh application makes. I tried it on my old Dell Latitude from 2012 and the CPU temps dropped 12 degrees C under load. Now I toss any paste that has been sitting in my drawer for more than a year. Has anyone else noticed a big difference just from using newer paste?

PSA: That 'high-end' vinyl plank from the big box store isn't what you think

I just got back from a job site in Louisville where I had to rip out 800 square feet of luxury vinyl plank that was only 18 months old. The homeowner bought it from one of those big box stores because the salesman told her it was 'commercial grade.' I saw the box myself - it was a 4mm wear layer with a foam backing. The stuff was curling at every seam and the locking system had failed in three separate rooms. What changed my mind was seeing how much money she wasted. I used to think any LVP from a national chain was fine for basic residential. Now I only recommend stuff from flooring-specific suppliers where you can actually feel the product and check the specs before buying. Has anyone else seen massive failures from these store brand planks?

Picked up one of those plastic hanging waterers from Tractor Supply last Tuesday and found a crack running down the side by Saturday. Anyone else had issues with those green screw-on lids getting brittle super fast?

I just learned why you don't use a cheap multimeter on a live 240v circuit

So I was swapping out an oven outlet at my buddy's rental in Austin last week. Figured I'd be smart and use this $8 Harbor Freight multimeter I had in my truck to check my work. Well, I accidentally touched the leads while the breaker was still on and the thing just exploded in my hand. Little puff of smoke and the plastic melted. Scared the crap out of me. Picked up a Fluke T6-600 the next day and now I get why the old timers always said not to cheap out on test gear. You guys ever have a tool fail in a scary way like that?

That attic run that ate my whole Wednesday

I got a call to run a new line from the basement to a second floor bedroom last Tuesday. What I thought would be a 2 hour job turned into 8 hours because someone decided to nail a crossbeam right in the middle of the only path up through the chase. Ended up having to drill from three different angles and fish a damn glow rod through 40 feet of blown insulation. Anybody else ever get stuck in a situation where the house framing just fights you the whole way?

Just learned why that fake blood I've been using always looks wrong on camera

I was reading a thread from a gaffer on a horror film set in Atlanta and he said most indie props people buy the cheap corn syrup blood from party stores. He pointed out the issue is the opacity. Real blood is semi-translucent on skin but those store bottles look like thick paint. He said the secret is adding a tiny amount of black food coloring to cut the brightness and using a water based mix instead. I spent $4 on a bottle of dark red food dye and a splash of dish soap last night and my test really looked way more real on my phone camera. Has anyone else figured out a cheap formula that doesn't stain fabric permanently?
