He said it with a straight face while holding a pristine hardcover, and when I asked if he'd rather use string to track his place, he just nodded slowly. Has anyone else had someone take a book club discussion way too seriously?

Switched to a digital torque wrench last month after 12 years of using a beam type

I always thought my old beam wrench was fine for engine work until I pulled a cylinder stud too tight on a Continental O-470 and cracked the flange. My lead mechanic handed me his Snap-on digital and showed me how the audible beep saves you from guessing on those hard to see angles. Has anyone else made the switch and found it worth the extra cash?

He said he's been using wire nuts for 40 years and never had a failure, but I've seen too many loose ones in old boxes. Has anyone else switched back after trying lever connectors?

Tried to save money by painting my own kitchen cabinets...

I spent three weekends painting my kitchen cabinets with a $20 brush set from the hardware store, and now they look like a wavy mess up close because I didn't sand properly between coats. My neighbor walked in, took one look, and asked if my five-year-old helped with the project. Has anyone else had a DIY paint job turn into a total disaster, or am I just the only one who skipped the sanding step?

PSA: I blew $450 on a trademark lawyer who filed the wrong class code and now I'm starting over

I paid a flat fee to register my brand name and the lawyer put it under Class 35 for retail services instead of Class 25 for clothing, so now the USPTO rejected it and I gotta pay again, has anyone else dealt with a lawyer that just rushes paperwork?

Trying to use Siri with a heavy accent is basically useless

I was driving home from work last week and asked Siri to call my wife, but she kept hearing 'call my life' instead. I said it maybe 5 times before I just gave up and pulled over to dial manually. It's wild how Apple's voice recognition can't handle anything outside that perfect American accent. Has anyone else with a different accent just stopped using voice assistants altogether?

Can we talk about how characters always get away with doing their own IVs?

I work nights as a nurse and I gag every time I see a character in a show just stab a needle into their arm like it's nothing. You ever try to hit a vein on yourself with shaky hands? It's nearly impossible and they act like it's a paper cut. Last week I had to start an IV on a tough patient and it took me three tries with good light. In real life you'd be in the ER with an infection or a collapsed vein within an hour. Has anyone here ever actually tried to do something medical on themselves after seeing it on TV?

My sourdough starter doubled in 4 hours after I switched to filtered water

Read on The Fresh Loaf that chlorine in tap water kills the bacteria. Tried it with a Brita pitcher and my starter went crazy. Anyone else have that big of a change from just changing water?

Old timer was right about mixing mortar in the shade

I was working a big retaining wall job up in Cleveland last July, and this 60 year old mason named Frank kept telling me I needed to mix my mortar in the shade or it'd set too fast. I shrugged it off because who has time to move their mixer every 20 minutes, right? Well, after 3 batches that turned into a crumbly mess before I could even butter the stones, I finally listened and it cut my waste by almost half. Anyone else had old timers give you advice that seemed like a pain but actually worked?

That week I tried painting my front door with a $5 sample jar was a disaster

Last Tuesday I got this wild idea to freshen up my front door with one of those little sample paint jars from Lowe's, thinking it'd be cheap and easy. I figured one coat would do it, but the color was so thin I used the whole tiny jar on just the top half of the door, and it looked patchy like a bad sunburn. Then I grabbed a regular quart of a different shade of red and slapped it on over the mess, but in the afternoon sun you can totally see both colors underneath. My neighbor walked by and asked if I was going for a "rustic layered look" which was her nice way of saying it looks terrible. I've got holidays coming up and now I'm stuck with a door that looks like a failed art project. Has anybody else tried the cheap paint route and ended up spending three times as much to fix it later?
