Just realized I had to pick between a high-concept sci-fi prompt or a simple character moment for a contest entry.

I went with the character piece about a barista who can see everyone's regrets, and it actually placed second. Anyone else ever had to make a choice like that between two totally different story ideas?

Rant: My basement floor drain backed up during the big thaw last week

It was Tuesday morning and I heard a weird gurgle from the utility room. By noon, there was a small puddle of gray water around the floor drain. I called a plumber from St. Albert who came out and ran a camera, finding about 15 feet of roots in the old clay line out to the alley. The whole fix, including the snaking and camera check, came to $650. Has anyone else in the Bonnie Doon area had this happen with the spring melt?

Had to pick between a new pump or a full engine rebuild on the old 8-inch cutter

The pump was losing pressure and the Detroit was smoking like a chimney. Boss said we could only fix one before the river job in St. Louis next month. I pushed for the pump, arguing we could baby the engine but a weak pump would kill our whole output. We swapped the impeller and housing, and sure enough, we moved mud all week even with the engine sounding rough. Anyone else had to make a call like that where fixing the wrong thing would have sunk you?

I had to pick between a Yubikey and a cheaper one from Amazon, went with the Yubikey and it took maybe 15 minutes. Has anyone else found a good way to store the backup codes?

Just realized everyone in my Python class keeps skipping the error messages

They just copy the red text into Google instead of reading it, which is why they're stuck on the same loops for days. Has anyone else found a good way to actually learn how to read those things?

Unpopular opinion: The new forum layout is killing real talk about shows.

Six months ago, the top posts here were all about story details and character stuff. Now it's just 'rate my top 10' lists and screenshot battles. The change happened right after the big site update in January. Feels like we're just posting pictures, not having discussions. Anyone else miss when people actually argued about plot points?

My attempt to fix a wobbly ceiling fan with a zip tie went about as well as you'd think

I saw a video where a guy used a zip tie to tighten a loose fan blade bracket, so I tried it on my own fan in the living room. When I turned it on, the zip tie snapped after about 30 seconds and shot across the room like a tiny plastic bullet, hitting my cat's water bowl. Has anyone else had a quick fix idea backfire in a really loud and messy way?

TIL my neighbor's sad little fern was a total glow-up story

Honestly, I saw it last spring looking all brown and crispy, but after she moved it to her bathroom for more humidity, it's now this huge, green monster. Anyone know if that trick works for a peace lily that's looking droopy?

Working the old dredge in Savannah and the mud there is something else

We were on the river near the old port, clearing a channel that hadn't been touched in maybe twenty years. The silt was so fine and packed, it kept clogging the pump screen every forty-five minutes like clockwork. We ended up running the cutter head slower and adding more water to the mix, which helped a ton. Anyone else dealt with that kind of sticky Georgia mud and found a better fix?

Spent 4 hours chasing a weird USB boot loop on a custom build

Got a custom PC in last week that would power on, post, then instantly reboot. No BSOD, no error codes, just a hard reset after 5 seconds. Spent an hour checking the usual suspects: PSU, RAM, CMOS, thermal paste. Everything seemed fine. Finally, on a hunch, I started unplugging everything from the board. Turns out it was a faulty internal USB 3.0 header cable from the front panel. The cable itself had a tiny short inside the connector. The second I unplugged it from the motherboard, the system booted and ran perfectly. I've seen bad front panel connectors before, but never one that caused a full boot loop without any other signs. Had to order a replacement cable from the case manufacturer, which took another 3 days. Has anyone else run into a weird boot issue caused by a front panel cable like that?
