Roman site in York compared to Pompeii, night and day difference in preservation
Tbh I just got back from a dig near York and the contrast with Pompeii photos is wild. The ash layer there froze everything, but here we're digging post holes and pottery shards from a fort that's basically rotted away after 1,800 years. Anyone else notice how the preservation method totally changes what you can actually learn from a site?
