I thought the 'lost city' in the Amazon was just hype until I saw the lidar maps

When those stories about a huge ancient settlement in Bolivia started popping up, I figured it was another overblown media thing. Then a professor at my local college showed me the raw lidar data from the Llanos de Mojos region. The images clearly showed raised platforms, canals, and huge geometric shapes under the forest canopy that you can't explain naturally. It completely flipped my view from total skeptic to believer in about ten minutes. Has anyone else had a find they doubted until they saw the hard evidence?

My neighbor's dog got out and I had to decide between calling animal control or trying to catch it myself.

This happened yesterday morning. I was leaving for a job when I saw my neighbor's big, friendly husky, Koda, loose in the street. The neighbor's car was gone. I had two choices: call animal control, which is the official 'right' thing, or try to get the dog myself and maybe tie him up on their porch. I knew animal control would take him to the pound, and my neighbor would have to pay a fine to get him back. I also knew Koda was sweet but could bolt. I decided to try luring him with some jerky from my truck. It took about ten minutes of slow walking, but I got a leash on him and secured him to their railing with a note. It worked out, but I spent the whole drive wondering if I did the wrong thing by not making the official report. What would you have done in that spot?

PSA: People still paint over dirty walls and it drives me nuts

I was helping my neighbor in his kitchen last month and saw him roll right over a greasy spot above the stove. He said 'the paint will cover it.' Spoiler: it didn't, the stain bled through in a week. I learned this the hard way in my first apartment 10 years ago. A $5 bottle of TSP substitute and 20 minutes of scrubbing makes all the difference. Now I see that shiny patch on his wall every time I visit. What's the one shortcut you see people take that always backfires?

A customer's 2005 Civic with a misfire turned into a full engine bay detail

They came in for a rough idle, and after I found a bad coil pack, I noticed the engine was absolutely filthy. I spent an extra hour just cleaning it with some Simple Green and a brush, and the customer was so happy they tipped me $50 on top of the repair. Anyone else have a small extra service that customers really appreciate?

That's not a secret theory, it's a published government rule. It changed my view from 'total fantasy' to 'okay, some of this is real and regulated'. Has anyone else dug into the official records on this stuff?

Just realized how much language choice pressure has increased

When I first tried coding a few years ago, the advice was just to pick one and start. Now, the beginner videos I watch spend half the time arguing about why their favorite language is the only real choice. It feels like you can't just learn Python without someone jumping in to say you should learn Rust instead. Makes starting way more stressful than it needs to be!
