My old Doom buddy said limit-removing source ports ruined map design, and after 6 months of mapping I think he's got a point
I got coffee last week with a guy I used to trade Doom wads with on a BBS back in the 90s, and he dropped something on me I can't shake. He said learning to build inside the original 1993 limits made him a better mapper, and that unlimited visplanes and no reject table just let people get lazy with geometry. At first I rolled my eyes, because who wants to fight drawsegs in 2024 when UDB handles most of it. But I went back and played the stuff I made 6 months ago with no limits, and half my rooms are just big empty boxes that only work because the engine stopped complaining. My best map is still the small one I squeezed into vanilla, because every hallway and window had to earn its place. He told me flat out, quote, constraints are the teacher, unlimited sectors are the excuse. So now I'm mapping vanilla again on purpose, and it's slow and annoying and way more fun. Any of you ever go back to building under the old limits, or am I just being nostalgic for no reason?
