Paid $8 for a PS/2 to USB adapter and my 1998 Model M finally lives on my work laptop
Found the adapter in a bin at a surplus store in Spokane and figured it was worth a shot after my old converter died. Plugged it in, the buckling springs clacked to life, and I typed a whole shift note on it without a single dropped key. Anyone else running old input gear on modern machines, or am I tempting fate here?
That bit about the buckling springs clacking to life got me grinning cause I did the exact same thing last year with a '93 Model M I pulled from my dad's garage. Bought a cheap blue cube adapter off eBay for like 10 bucks and it worked fine on my desktop, but my work laptop needed one with a real chip inside or it kept dropping keys during meetings. Mine has been going strong for months now with zero issues, so you are not tempting fate at all. These boards were built like tanks and the springs outlast everything else in the chain. The one thing I'd watch is the adapter itself, cause the cheap ones can die fast and then you'll be hunting for another one. Just keep a spare in your bag and you're set for years.
