Watched my neighbor's smart doorbell get turned into a spam machine last year, just because he never updated the app. Same deal with my old wifi extender, thing sat in a closet for years, still plugged in, still on firmware from like 2016. We treat all this stuff like a fridge or a toaster, buy it once and forget it exists, but it's more like a car that needs oil changes or it blows up. People flash their phones every other year but the router in the basement is running software older than some of the kids in my building. Then we act surprised when some dude in another country is routing traffic through our living room. Update the junk or unplug it, that's really it.
