Just saw my home's carbon footprint report and the number that got me was 4.2 tons

I got a free audit from the local utility in Boise, and they said that's my yearly output just from heating and electricity. I always figured it was lower because we recycle, but the report showed our old furnace is a real energy hog. Has anyone else been surprised by their home's numbers and made a specific change that helped?

Saw a guy at the Portland airport wearing a suit made of old airline seat covers

I was waiting for a flight last Tuesday and this dude walks by in a full three piece suit that was clearly made from those blue and gray patterned fabrics you see on plane seats. He even had little seatbelt buckles as cufflinks. It was wild, like he was a walking first class cabin. Has anyone else seen fashion that takes inspiration from a really weird place like that?

I finally stopped killing my indoor plants after a friend called me out

My buddy came over and saw my sad fiddle leaf fig in the corner. He said, 'You're treating it like a cactus, but it wants a humid bathroom.' I moved it to the guest bath about two months ago, and it's put out three new leaves already. Anyone else have a plant that totally turned around after a simple location change?

I was at the hardware store in Springfield and this guy told me he anneals his steel in his kitchen oven at 400 degrees.

He was so sure of himself, saying it works fine for his 'projects'. I had to bite my tongue. That's not annealing, that's just warming it up. Real annealing needs way more heat, like over 1300 degrees for mild steel, to actually soften it. It got me thinking about how many people might be trying to learn from bad advice out there. Has anyone else run into a piece of shop advice that was just completely wrong?

Why does nobody talk about checking the water temp before a color service?

I was doing a full color correction on a client with level 5 hair, and she kept saying her scalp felt hot. I finally touched the water myself and realized my assistant had the hose set way too high. It was probably over 110 degrees. How do you guys make sure the temp is right every single time?

Appreciation post: My boss in Denver showed me his trick for a bad subfloor after I almost ruined a whole glue-down job

Honestly, I was laying this engineered wood in a 1920s bungalow last month and didn't catch a soft spot that flexed a full quarter inch until the adhesive was already setting, so I called him panicking and he had me cut out a 2x2 foot section, sister in new joists with construction adhesive and screws, then pour a leveling compound patch, which saved the install and about $1500 in material.

My brother told me to always check the clock when a weird thing happens, and it saved me from a full freak out.

Last Tuesday, I was driving home from work and saw the exact same blue truck pass me three times in a row on the same stretch of road. It felt impossible. I remembered what he said, so I looked at my car clock. It was 4:44. He told me if you see a pattern like that during a glitch, it's like a marker, not a coincidence. It made the whole thing feel less random and more like... something else. Has anyone else had a time or number pop up right when reality seemed to bend?

Appreciation post: I returned a wallet I found in a grocery cart

Found a wallet stuffed with cash and cards in a cart at the Food Mart on Elm. Turned it in at the service desk. The owner called me later, said he was about to cancel his trip because his ID was in there. Felt good, but also weirdly guilty for even thinking about keeping it for a second. Anyone else get that split-second moral tug of war?

Serious question, how do you deal with a forge that just won't get hot enough?

Last month, I was trying to forge a set of tongs in my backyard shop and my propane forge was barely hitting a bright orange. I checked the regulator, cleaned the burners, everything. My buddy in Toledo said it might be the pressure, so I bumped it up a bit, which helped, but it still felt weak. It took me almost twice as long to draw out the steel. Has anyone else had this kind of slow heat problem and found a solid fix?

Finally caved and bought a proper long box for my collection

My old cardboard boxes were falling apart (I'm talking tape on tape at this point). I dropped about $25 on a sturdy plastic long box from the local shop last Friday. It took me a whole afternoon to carefully move everything over, but now my runs are safe and I can actually find things. Anyone else have a better storage solution that doesn't break the bank?
