Paid $40 for a used trowel and a sifter off a retired guy in Tucson, best money I've put into this hobby
I got into looking for arrowheads and pottery shards around Tucson last spring and kept coming up empty with just my hands and a stick. A retired surveyor sold me his old Marshalltown trowel and a wooden sifter frame for $40 total, and he showed me how to skim instead of dig. Two weeks later I pulled a whole Hohokam sherd out of a wash that I'd walked past like ten times. The trowel edge stays sharp and the sifter catches stuff my fingers miss every single time. Anyone else here buy used gear from old timers, and did it actually help or was it just luck?
Bought a Coleman cooler off a guy at a swap meet in Yuma and he threw in a whole bucket of flakes he'd picked up over 20 years. Half of them turned out to be just rocks but I sat there for a month matching points to them anyway. Best part was hearing him talk, the gear was almost a bonus.
