Thought vanilla Doom was perfect until I tried Brutal Doom for the first time

I spent years thinking mods just broke the feel of classic games. Then my buddy forced me to try Brutal Doom on his rig last month. The way the weapons kick and the gibs fly actually made the game feel fresh again. Anyone else have a mod that completely changed how you see an old game?

My grandpa's old wooden hand plane from the 50s vs. that plastic handled one I got at the big box store last year

The old one took me an hour to sharpen and set up right, but it sliced through some oak like butter and left a finish I didn't even need to sand, while the new one chattered and left gouges no matter how tight I cranked the adjustment knob - has anyone else noticed how much better the older tools actually work once you learn them?

Quick tip on dating pottery sherds from surface finds

I keep seeing people post photos of random pottery pieces they found and say they're Roman or medieval based on nothing but a hunch. If you actually look at the temper material under a cheap magnifying glass, you can often spot crushed shell or grog that tells you the real period. Has anyone else noticed people jumping to conclusions without checking the basics first?

That old repair shop in Akron where I learned to check the shutter curtain first

I was up at Dave's Camera Repair in Akron about 10 years ago, helping him clear out some old parts. He showed me a box of cameras that people had sent in for CLA work, all with the same issue - someone had greased the shutter mechanism like it was a car engine. Dave told me that's the #1 mistake newbies make, thinking oil fixes everything. Has anyone else run into cameras where the previous repair person just dumped lubricant everywhere?

Overheard a guy at the meat counter say aged beef is a scam

I was buying chuck roast last Saturday and this older guy told the butcher that dry aging is just a way to charge more for meat that's going bad. He said he's been eating fresh cut beef for 40 years and never had an issue. It got me thinking about how much of the aging process actually matters for flavor versus just being a marketing thing. For a home cook on a budget, is dry aging really worth the extra $8 a pound or is he onto something? Anyone else run into this kind of pushback from customers?

Vent: The day I tried to play a 'cozy' game and ended up rage-quitting before the tutorial ended

I was at my desk last Saturday, thought I'd finally check out that farming sim everyone's been talking about. Ten minutes in and the controls are a mess, the character walks slower than my grandma, and the text is this tiny font I could barely read. I spent another fifteen minutes trying to remap the keys and just closed it out. Has anyone else had a game that felt like a chore from the very start?

Vent: Second time I used a power stretcher on a tight wool carpet and it ripped at the tack strip

I was doing a living room in wool yesterday and the stretch felt too aggressive, but I kept going. By the end of the row, the carpet had torn right at the edge near the doorway, about six inches long. Is there a trick to getting wool to hold under tension without it giving out like that?

Why I stopped doubting the moon landing footage grain issue

I used to think the weird grain in Apollo 16 footage was proof of a studio setup. Then I watched a NASA tech talk where they showed the actual film stock details. Turns out they used a specific Kodak 2485 film that has crazy high sensitivity because they needed it for the bright lunar surface. The grain pattern matches exactly what you get from pushing that film speed in extreme light conditions. Has anyone else looked at the raw film specs and changed their mind?

Cleaned a 30-year-old flue last week and the before/after was unreal

I got called to this old house in Burlington that hadn't had a sweep in probably a decade. The homeowner said they were getting smoke back every time they lit a fire. I ran my brush through and started pulling out this thick, sticky creosote that was almost like tar. After about an hour of scrubbing and using a rotary tool, the difference was night and day. The draft went from barely pulling to roaring so loud you could hear it from across the room. Honestly made me realize how many people just ignore their chimney until something goes wrong. Do you guys ever just clean a flue that looks totally fine but then find a huge block of creosote hiding up near the crown?
