Had a crucible crack during a pour at the old Johnson plant. Metal went everywhere.

Man, that brass rod trick is clever. It reminds me of when we used to thump the kiln shelves with a wooden mallet before a glaze firing. You'd get this weird dead thud if there was a hidden crack, saved us from a few disasters. Different material, same basic idea of listening for trouble. Sometimes the old school methods just work.

Vent: I saw a 'blacksmith' at a county fair in Boise last fall and it made me think

Yeah, I read an article that called it "demonstration craft." It's more about showing a process people can watch quickly than making something from scratch. The real skill is still out there, but you won't see it at a fair.

Finally got my A&P after failing the oral on hydraulics twice

Did you ever try making a voice recording of your explanation? I mean, hearing myself stumble through it helped me find the gaps in my own understanding.

Overheard a bride at a venue say she picked her florist because of the delivery setup

Photo labels sound smart but they also hand over your whole setup plan. That bride basically gave her florist's playbook to the venue staff. I've seen places use those pictures to cut corners later, like reusing centerpieces from the ceremony without asking. Sometimes a little mystery keeps your work from getting messed with by someone trying to save time.

My mentor insisted I charge at least $75 for a corrective color, and that first client who agreed changed my whole pricing structure.

Man, I used to be so sure that raising prices would just push people away. I figured folks would shop around for the cheapest option. But seeing stuff like this, where someone doubles their rate and gets more work, really flips that idea on its head. It must make clients see the service as more valuable, like they're getting something special instead of just a basic cut. Makes me wonder how many of us are just leaving money on the table.
