A cashier in Dayton told me to check the per-unit price before I grab the big box, and I've been doing math in the aisle ever since
Last week I was at a grocery store in Dayton and the cashier rang up my big value pack of paper towels, then leaned over and pointed at the tiny number in the corner of the tag. She said the 6 pack was a worse deal per sheet than the 8 pack that was sitting right next to it, and she was right, by about 30 cents a roll. I'd been buying the big box for months thinking bigger always costs less. Now I catch myself pulling out my phone calculator in the aisle and dividing, which looks a little silly but I don't care. I also found out the store brand of dish soap is basically the same as the name brand at half the price, at least for washing dishes by hand. I'm still pretty new at this so I wanted to ask, what's the one per-unit price check you never skip? And does anyone know a fast way to do the math when the tag only lists the total price?
