My kraut blew its lid at 3 AM last night

I was using a standard airlock on a quart jar, but the cabbage was way too active. It made a huge mess all over my kitchen counter. Anyone have a better setup for really fizzy ferments?

My cousin in Denver said coding is just like learning a new language, not building a house from scratch.

I finally hit 50,000 words on my novel draft after hearing a kid in a coffee shop

I was at The Daily Grind in Austin last week and overheard a teenager telling her friend about a character who could only tell the truth on Tuesdays. It made me realize I'd been overcomplicating my own magic system. I went home and just wrote the simplest version, and the words finally started flowing. Has anyone else had a random conversation unlock a block like that?

Tried asking a direct question in a meeting yesterday and got total silence for 30 seconds

I was in our weekly team check-in, just a video call with 8 people. We were going around giving updates, and when it got to me, I decided to skip the usual fluff. I said, 'Okay, my project is blocked because I need a decision on the budget. Who can actually approve the extra $500?' I thought someone would jump in, but nope. Just quiet. I could see people looking away from their cameras. It was super awkward. I guess I learned that even in an 'ask anything' culture, people get weird when you actually do it. How do you get a straight answer without making everyone freeze up?

My kid asked me why my code was just a bunch of copy-pasted lines and it stung.

I was showing my 13-year-old my first Python script, a simple thing that printed 'hello' 10 times, and she pointed out I'd just written the same line over and over instead of using a loop, which she'd just learned in school.

Just realized my old drill has a torque setting for a reason

I was trying to put together a new shelf from a box and kept stripping the screws. I found a dusty manual online for my 10-year-old Black & Decker drill and saw it mentioned a clutch. I turned it down to the number 4 setting and the screws went in perfectly without messing up the heads. I mean, I've had this thing forever and never used that part. Has anyone else had a simple tool feature they ignored for years that actually fixes a common problem?

A customer told me my sourdough was 'too sour' and it made me rethink my starter

This regular at my stall said the flavor was so strong it made her mouth pucker, which honestly stung a bit. I realized I was feeding my starter with rye flour every single time, which really amps up the tang. I switched to feeding it with plain white bread flour for the two feeds before a bake, and the difference is huge. The bread still has that nice sourdough taste but it's much smoother now. Has anyone else tweaked their feeding schedule to change the final flavor?

Vent: My whole view on old work changed after a rewire in a 1920s Philly row house

We pulled the plaster off a kitchen wall last week. Found original knob and tube, a mess of 1960s cloth wire, and some 1980s romex all tied together with electrical tape. After we ran all new 12/2 and put in a proper sub-panel, the owner said his lights stopped flickering for the first time in twenty years. How do you guys even start planning for a job when you don't know what's in the walls?
