Hot take: group projects are worse solo, not better

My lab partner ghosted me 2 days before our chem presentation last week, and honestly the panic solo run went smoother than any team effort we had. Has anyone else found that one flaky teammate makes the whole thing harder than just doing it alone?

Vent: Tried the 8 AM 'Genius Hour' study method and it flopped hard

I saw this post about blocking out 6-8 AM for deep work before classes, thought it would fix my procrastination. Three weeks in, I'm just more tired and my morning coffee at the campus Grindstone costs me an extra $2.50 because I'm too groggy to brew my own. The only thing I learned is that my brain does its best thinking after 9 PM in the library, not at dawn. The RA who remembered everyone's name on move-in day

Last August I moved my daughter into her dorm at Emory, and we were both a wreck. The RA, a senior named Marcus, met us at the car with a cart and said 'You're the O'Brien family, right? Your room is 214, near the stairs.' He had a clipboard with every student's name and hometown, and he'd memorized most of them before anyone arrived. At the end of the day, I saw him helping a kid from Texas carry a mini fridge up three flights alone. That one interaction made me trust the whole school more than any brochure ever did. Has anyone else had a campus worker or upperclassman go way past their job description? What did they do?

Commuter rail or campus dorm? I picked the train and it's a toss-up

I chose the 55-minute Metra ride from Aurora over paying $1,200 a month for a dorm near DePaul, and honestly, I'm split on it. The train gives me free time to read and saves a ton of money, but I miss the late-night study groups and random hangouts in the lounge. My roommate last semester swore by living on campus for the social life, but she's drowning in loans now. My advisor's one comment made me dump my entire class schedule

I met with my advisor at State College on Tuesday to fix a registration hold, and she pointed out that every single class I picked had a lecture component, which I never noticed before. She said I should mix in a lab or seminar since I clearly learn better hands-on, and that stuck with me because it explained why I kept zoning out in my psych 200 section. She was gone just 5 days in Atlanta visiting her family. Came back Monday and suddenly she's waking up at 6am to run, meal prepping, and actually doing the readings before class. My history TA's one comment changed how I take every exam now

Financial aid office sent me in circles for 6 weeks over a missing form

Walked into the campus library at 3am and saw a full on cheese party

I pulled an all nighter last Tuesday for my econ final and decided to hit the library quiet floor around 3am. There was this group of like 6 dudes in the corner with a whole charcuterie board, crackers, and a block of brie that looked bigger than my laptop. Turns out they started a secret cheese club and they recruit people by leaving notes in the study carrels. I sat down to grab some water and one of them slid me a slice of gouda with a wink. Honestly it was the most focused I've been all semester, cheese does something to the brain I guess. They said they meet every week on the third floor behind the reference section. Has anyone else stumbled on weird late night study rituals or am I the only one who found a whole dairy operation in the stacks?

Overheard a freshman say 'everything is on Canvas anyway' and it hit me weird

I was grabbing coffee at the student union and this kid says he doesn't even check his email because profs post everything on Canvas. I remember having to walk to the library to check a physical bulletin board for syllabus changes. Tried recording lectures on my phone instead of taking handwritten notes and my test scores actually went up

I was super skeptical at first because I've always been a pen and paper person. My roommate kept telling me I was wasting time writing everything down so I gave it a shot for my Biology 101 class. The professor talks really fast and I kept missing stuff when I was writing. Now I just record the audio with this app called Otter and I listen to it again while I'm driving to work or folding laundry. My last exam I got an 89 and before I was barely scraping by with a C. Has anyone else tried this and had mixed results or am I just lucky so far?

Group study sessions are worse than studying alone

Everyone in my dorm swears by group study for finals. Tried it three times last semester. Complete waste of time. People talk too much about non-class stuff. Takes forever to get through one chapter. I got more done in two hours alone at the library than four hours in the group. My GPA actually went up after I stopped going. Anyone else find group study counterproductive or is it just my classmates?

Group projects would be fine if people actually showed up

I'm in a 4-person group for my psych 101 class at State, and it's week 8 now. Two of my group members have literally never replied to a single email or shown up to our meetups. I'm stuck doing their half of the work on top of my own because the professor docks everyone the same if it's incomplete. Has anyone else had to deal with teammates who just ghost and leave you holding the bag?

Why does nobody talk about how much time group projects actually waste?

I used to think group projects were great because you split the work. Then last semester I had a marketing group where we spent 3 hours just arguing about font choices for a 10 slide presentation. Three people wanted Comic Sans unironically. I honestly miss just doing everything myself sometimes because the endless 'hey can you check this' texts at 11 PM are exhausting. Has anyone else had a group that basically became a social club instead of getting work done?

Overheard a group of freshmen complaining about gen eds in the library last Thursday and it hit me that I actually miss my philosophy 101 class.

They were all grumbling about having to read Plato, but that class literally taught me how to break down arguments which has saved me in three political science papers this semester, has anyone else found a gen ed that unexpectedly helped them later?

I switched from paper notes to a big whiteboard in my dorm room and after 21 days my exam scores went up by 12 points because I could see the whole topic at once and fix gaps fast. Has anyone else tried swapping their notebook for a wall board?

It was last fall in the library at Ohio State, I had 3 hours of research written up and she literally copy-pasted it 10 minutes before the deadline. Has anyone else had a teammate steal your work and somehow get away with it?
