She grabbed a loaf of my jalapeno cheddar too and said it looked dry. I proof it at 80% hydration, not dry at all. How do you handle customers who don't get what rustic bread is supposed to be?

Had a customer call me out for reusing crush washers on oil changes

About three months back a guy in an F-150 watched me put an old crush washer back on and said 'you know those are one-time use, right?' I always thought it was fine but now I swap them every single time, has anyone else had a customer teach them something basic they should have known?

I was at a flea market in Portland last summer digging through a bin of old coats. This lady next to me picked up a 1970s wool blazer and said, 'Feel how heavy this is - they don't make them like this anymore.' She was right, it weighed like 3 pounds easy. I asked her why that mattered, and she explained how heavier fabrics drape better and last decades longer. Now I check weight tags on everything before I buy fabric for my own designs. Has anyone else noticed modern jackets feeling flimsy compared to ones from back then?

My clamp broke mid-glue up on a $2,200 custom kitchen job yesterday

Had a 20 year old Jorgensen bar clamp snap right at the handle while I was pressing a mitered panel together, ruining the joint and wasting half an hour of setup. Anybody else have a tool fail at the worst possible moment and how did you fix it?

TIL a lot of folks are quenching in the wrong oil for 1095 steel

I was helping a guy in Des Moines last Tuesday fix a knife he messed up, and he kept saying he used motor oil for his 1095 blades. That's a big mistake because 1095 needs a fast oil like Parks 50 to get a proper quench, not something slow like used engine oil. His edges were soft because the steel didn't harden right. Anyone here actually tested different oils side by side to see the difference?

That safety stat about deco stops almost made me quit diving

I was reading through a DAN report from 2022 and saw that 1 in 4 diving fatalities had something to do with missed or shortened deco stops. That shocked me because I always thought the gear failures were the main killer, not people rushing the surface. Found the full PDF on their site under the annual incident report. Has anyone here actually changed their whole ascent routine after seeing numbers like that?

Tried that flex seal tape on a leaking gutter joint and it actually made things worse

So my downspout had a crack near the elbow and I figured hey, $15 roll of that flex seal tape will fix it right up. I cleaned the area, dried it with a heat gun, and slapped that stuff on thick. Next rainstorm came and water was spraying out like a fountain from behind the tape. Turns out the tape trapped moisture against the metal and now I've got rust starting under there. I had to cut the whole section out and replace it with a PVC coupling and some ABS cement for like $8. Total wasted afternoon and now I'm out $15 for the tape I barely used. Anyone else had that tape just peel off or fail on outdoor stuff?

Realized I was wasting $40 a week on pre-made rice packs

The rice cooker was the single best $20 I ever spent on kitchen stuff. I got one at Walmart three years ago and it still works like day one. And hey @jamesmason maybe it is just rice, but that "just rice" adds up fast when you're feeding two people and noticing the grocery total at the end of the month. For anyone else reading this just rinse the dry rice a couple times before you cook it and use a 2 to 1 water ratio and it comes out perfect every time. I also started buying the big 20 pound bags of jasmine rice at the Asian grocery for $12 and it lasts me like three months.
