Update: the guy at the camera shop in Boise said my scratched negatives were trash, so I tried soaking them
Stopped by a shop on State Street in Boise to ask about a roll of Tri-X with a big scratch down frame 4 from a bent felt lip on my Canon AE-1. The guy behind the counter looked at it for two seconds and said the scratch was permanent, nothing to do but toss the roll. I went home and soaked the strip in distilled water with a drop of Photo-Flo for about 10 minutes, then hung it to dry weighted at the bottom, and the scratch mostly vanished once it dried flat. It was just a surface mark from the felt, not gouged into the emulsion. Has anyone dealt with felt scratching and tried replacing it with a strip of thin velvet instead?
My dad had an old Argus C3 with the same felt problem and he swore by a trick he read in some 70s photo mag, which was rubbing a tiny bit of paraffin wax on the felt lip. Said it kept the felt from grabbing grit that causes those scratches. He did it every few rolls for years and never had a scratch issue again. Not sure if the wax would gunk up over time but his camera outlasted three of mine so maybe he was onto something. Now I want to dig that camera out of the closet and check the felt myself.
