Tried recapping an old Commodore 64 power supply and got a face full of smoke instead

After three hours of soldering on that PSU I thought I'd fixed the flickering screen, but plugging it in just made a loud pop and now my living room smells like burnt electronics, has anyone else had a recap go sideways like that?

Found out Elden Ring sold 20 million copies and I was shocked

I was just browsing Wikipedia the other day looking up fromsoft games and saw Elden Ring passed 20 million sales. That number blew my mind because I remember when Dark Souls was this niche hard game only a few people cared about. Now a game like that is one of the best selling ever across all consoles. Has anyone else been surprised by how big a specific game got compared to what you expected?

Hot take: filler episodes in long-running anime are actually important for pacing

I keep seeing people skip entire arcs in shows like One Piece or Naruto because they call it filler. But I watched Bleach from episode 1 to 366 last year, filler included, and the payoff in the canon arcs hit way harder. The breather episodes let you care about side characters so the main story has more weight. Has anyone else noticed that skipping episodes makes the main fights feel rushed?

I mean I figured it'd crap out after a year but this little thing has survived rain, heat, and a squirrel trying to chew the wire. Anyone else get lucky with a cheap buy that just keeps going?

PSA: Check your air fryer basket for loose coating before cooking

I was making frozen chicken wings in my Cosori last night and noticed little black flakes on them halfway through. Turns out the nonstick coating on the basket was peeling off. Had to toss the whole batch and order a replacement basket.

Just tried a salt brine vs a whey brine for my hot sauce ferment

I've been making fermented hot sauce for about 2 years now, and last week I tested two batches side by side with the same peppers. One used a 3% salt brine and the other used leftover whey from making yogurt. After 10 days, the whey batch had way more bubbles and a tangier, funkier flavor. The salt batch was good but more one note. I'm thinking the whey gave it a head start with lactobacillus already active. Has anyone else experimented with different liquid starters for their ferments?

Found a hidden gem at an estate sale in Tacoma last weekend

I usually hit up estate sales for tools and old furniture, but last Saturday in Tacoma I stumbled into this house that looked like a garage sale gone wild. Mostly junk, right? But then I spotted a box shoved under a table with old fishing lures and some rusty reels. The seller wanted $5 for the whole box, so I grabbed it on a whim. Later at home I found a 1950s Heddon Pal lure inside that was in near mint condition. I looked it up online and saw it going for around $60 on eBay. Small win, but it got me thinking about how easy it is to pass over stuff that looks grimy but has real value. Anyone else ever find something unexpected that paid off?

A journeyman in Houston changed how I think about preheating

Old school guy told me I was overthinking my preheat temps on some 2 inch wall tube. Said he just watches the color of the steel instead of chasing exact numbers with a temp stick. I still use the gauge but I pay more attention now, and my passes are coming out cleaner. Anyone else ever ditch the textbook for something that just works?
