Thought those 12 dollar solar coop lights were a scam, turns out my hens stop laying at 4pm because of them
I grabbed a two pack of those cheap solar puck lights off a clearance endcap at Tractor Supply back in March mostly as a joke, since I figured a 12 dollar light that charges off the sun would be dead by dinner. For 3 months the girls were off the roost and into the coop by 4pm every single day, which meant I was losing eggs because they just sit in there instead of using the nest boxes. I zip tied one light inside the coop door and now they wander in around 7pm and I'm finding 5 or 6 eggs a day instead of 3. I honestly don't get why it works, maybe it's just enough light that they don't panic at dusk. Has anyone else messed with coop lighting, and did it bite you in the winter when the days got short?
