Funny how a random stranger being nice about your box map sticks with you 20 years later, huh? Not sure it's some big tragedy that we all lost touch though. Forums were like a bus stop, you chat with people while you wait and then everybody gets on their own bus. SkullBreaker probably has a wife and kids now and hasn't thought about Quake in a decade. That said, I do wonder sometimes if those old handles are still out there somewhere, playing some other game under the same name.

Nah, flat ones just suck on square tile period. @rowan666 is right that shape matters but even matched up they only hit two sides.

Watched this same thing play out in a hundred different ways over the years. Fancy new setups get all the hype and cost three times as much, but when the job gets ugly the old reliable stuff still does the work. My grandpa used to say they don't make things like they used to and every year that passes I believe him more. New tools are built to be sold, old tools were built to be used until they wore out. I still grab my dad's old pipe wrench over the shiny one in my box half the time because it just bites better.
