Had to choose between a big title block or a separate sheet for a recent set of plans

I was working on a set of residential remodel drawings last week, and I got stuck on the cover sheet. The client wanted a clean look, but the project had a long official name and a bunch of notes. I had to pick between trying to cram everything into one big, fancy title block on the first page or breaking it out onto a dedicated cover sheet. I went with the separate sheet, thinking it would be more organized. It took me an extra two hours to set up all the text styles and borders just right. Honestly, it felt a bit overkill once it was printed, like I made a simple thing too fancy. The client didn't say anything about it, good or bad. Has anyone else run into this and found a better middle ground?

Finally fixed my washing machine's weird thumping noise for about $40

My washer started making this loud thump-thump-thump sound during the spin cycle about two weeks ago. I was sure it was a major problem, maybe the drum or the motor. I watched a bunch of videos and finally figured out it was probably the shock absorbers. I ordered a set online for around $40, which felt like a gamble. Getting the old ones out was a fight (they're under the tub, and you need to tilt the whole machine back). But once I got the new ones in and ran a test load, it was dead silent. I was so happy I didn't have to call a repair person. Has anyone else had to replace these on a front-loader? I'm curious if they tend to go bad at a certain age.

Vent: I hit $0 spent on a 4-day trip to Chicago and everyone says it's impossible

Okay, hear me out. I know this sounds crazy, but I just got back from a long weekend in Chicago and my out-of-pocket spending was zero dollars. I'm not talking about flights or a place to stay, I had points for those. I mean for food, fun, and getting around once I was there. I used credit card points I'd saved up to cover a transit pass and bought a bunch of grocery store gift cards with other points before I left. I packed my own lunches, used museum free days, and walked everywhere. A lot of folks in budget groups say you have to spend some cash, that the experience is cheapened, but I had a blast seeing the Art Institute and walking the lakefront. It felt like a game to me. Has anyone else tried a true zero-spend challenge on a city trip, or do you think having a small cash budget is just smarter?

The vibe at my local shop changed so much in a year

Used to be a chill spot where you could talk about old Claremont X-Men runs or weird indie stuff, but now it's all about the next movie trailer and who's getting cast. I went in last week and the owner, Dave, said he had to clear out half the back issues to make room for Funko Pops because that's what sells now. Feels like the actual comic fans got pushed out. Anyone else's shop go through this?

My shop's cooler went from a mess to a money maker after one simple switch

About four months ago, my walk-in cooler was a real headache. Flowers were getting lost in the back, things were wilting because I'd forget about them, and I was tossing about $150 worth of stock every week. I saw a post here about using clear, stackable bins instead of just putting boxes on the shelves. I bought a dozen from a supply store in town, nothing fancy. Now, each bin holds a single flower type, labeled on the front with the date it came in. I can see everything at a glance. My waste dropped to maybe $20 a week almost right away because I use the oldest stuff first without even thinking. It sounds so small, but seeing that before and after in my weekly numbers was wild. Has anyone else tried a storage trick that saved them a bunch of money?

Talked to a guy who only uses a 6-inch wheel for his bevels on heavy glass

He said it gives him way more control on thick pieces, especially for custom shower doors. I've always stuck with my 8-inch and never thought to change. Has anyone else tried this for big jobs?

I spent two hours trying to fix a shutter that wasn't broken

A guy brought in a classic Nikon F3 saying the shutter was stuck, and I immediately dove into the mirror box with my tools. After a full teardown, I found the problem: the film advance lever was only halfway cocked because he'd loaded it wrong. What's the silliest 'repair' you've done that was just user error?

Vent: The great hollandaise disaster of last Thursday

I was doing a simple brunch service at The Morning Cafe and my hollandaise broke. I tried everything, even a double boiler trick from an old cookbook, but it took a full 45 minutes to get it back. Has anyone else had a sauce just refuse to come together like that?

My old kitchen table went from wobbly mess to rock solid in about an hour

The thing was shaking so bad you couldn't write on it. I finally took a look underneath and saw all the old glue in the joints had completely dried out and crumbled. I used a syringe to inject some Titebond III wood glue into each loose joint, clamped it tight with some bar clamps I had, and let it sit overnight. The difference is crazy, it doesn't move at all now. Has anyone else fixed wobbly furniture this way, or did you try something different like adding corner braces?
