I used to hate working on old cotter pin cranks, but a guy at the co-op showed me a trick with a brass drift and a 3lb hammer that changed my mind.

It's funny how often the right simple tool changes everything. You see it in cooking with a good knife or even just having a decent pen. That one piece of gear just cuts through the frustration.

Rant: A museum trip in Chicago totally flipped my view on pockets

Totally! My backpack straps gave me the same idea.

Rant: I thought 'write what you know' was the worst advice until my story about a tax audit got picked for an anthology.

Oh man, that tracks... I once wrote about just the sound of a forklift backing up and got the same note.

Had a weird power surge fry a brand new panel in a Phoenix attic

Man, that's brutal. I've had a cheapo motion sensor get cooked from a bad ground in an old house, but a whole new panel is next level pain. That drive back to the supplier alone sounds like a special kind of torture, especially in that heat. It makes total sense to start checking the outlets now, I might have to steal that idea. Just a really expensive way to learn a lesson.

Am I the only one who sees people over-pruning young maples in spring?

Nah, you're overthinking it. A hard prune in spring just redirects the tree's energy into stronger new growth. I've seen plenty of young maples bounce back thicker and healthier after a heavy cut. That sunscald you mentioned sounds like bad luck, not the rule. Sometimes you gotta shape them aggressively to get the form you want fast.
