Had to choose between a full re-stretch or just patching a 4x6 bubble in a 10 year old office job

Went with the patch to save the client money, but the backing was so brittle it tore like paper. Anyone got a better fix for old, dry carpet that won't hold a seam?

Hey @the_vera, I feel you on that - ten years is a solid run for office carpet. I had the same mess last year with a 12 year old entryway rug. I ended up using a heat bond tape with a low temp iron on the old backing. You have to be SUPER careful not to char it though. What really saved me was prepping the edges by scraping off all the loose fibers and giving it a thin layer of carpet seam adhesive first. Let that dry for 24 hours before trying the patch again. The old backing is just too dry to hold anything without that extra grip.
