Tried a new pointing style on a garden wall and the difference was huge

I built two identical brick garden walls for a client in Charlotte last spring, about 30 feet each. On the first one, I used a standard flush joint with my trowel. For the second, I took the extra time to do a proper concave joint with a proper jointer. The concave joint shed water instantly during the next rain, while the flush joint let water sit and darken the brick. It only added maybe 20 minutes to the whole job, but the finished look and function were so much better. Has anyone else found a small change in technique that made a surprisingly big difference on a project?

Trying to fix a broken tent pole on a trip in the Adirondacks took me 3 hours

I snapped a section of my Kelty Trail Ridge 2 pole on the first night. The repair sleeve in the kit was useless, so I had to improvise a splint with a stick and a ton of duct tape. It held, but the whole ordeal ate up most of my evening. Anyone have a better field fix for a clean break in a tent pole?

Saw a really old lathe at the museum in Rockford

I took my kid to the Discovery Center Museum there last weekend. They have this whole section on old factory tools. There was a belt-driven lathe from the 1920s, just sitting there. It made me think about how far our machines have come, from that to the 5-axis we run now. Anyone know if places like that ever let people run the old stuff for demos?

A neighbor told me to stop feeding the stray cats in our alley

Last Tuesday, I was putting out a bowl of dry food for the two strays that live behind my building in Milwaukee. My neighbor, Mr. Ellis, came out and said, 'You're just making the problem worse. They'll never leave now.' He argued it was kinder to let animal control handle them. I kept putting the food down because a harsh winter is coming and they rely on it. Has anyone else been in a spot where helping felt like the right call, even if it wasn't the popular one?

Just hit 500 hours on my new Kirby Morgan Superlite 17 and the difference is wild

I logged my 500th hour on this helmet last week during a hull cleaning job in Tampa Bay. I remember the first 10 hours were a real fight, getting used to the weight and the new field of view. But now, it feels like a part of me down there. The comms are crystal clear, and I can work for a full 8-hour shift without that nagging neck strain I used to get with my old rig. It’s not just about comfort, either. My bottom time is more productive because I’m not constantly adjusting. Has anyone else had a piece of gear that just clicked after a specific break-in period? How many hours did it take for your main kit to feel truly second nature?

My friend in Denver made these crispy tofu cubes that changed my whole game

I was over at his place for a game night and he just tossed some extra firm tofu in cornstarch and a bit of soy sauce, then air fried it at 400 for 15 minutes. They came out perfect, way better than my usual soggy baked version. What's your go-to simple air fryer trick for making veggies or tofu actually good?

I read a blog post from a guy who tracked his usage and he burned through 40 pounds of lump charcoal for a single brisket cook. Has anyone else measured their fuel use for a long smoke?

Why does nobody talk about the time a kid squirmed and you cut his ear?

Had a 7 year old in my chair in Milwaukee who jerked his head right as I went for the sideburn line. I just put a bit of pressure on the nick with a clean towel and kept my cool, finished the cut, and his mom never even noticed. Anyone else have a close call like that and how do you handle it?

I thought the 'cash envelope' thing was just for extreme couponers, but after trying it for groceries this month, I actually spent $127 less.

My sister made me use labeled envelopes for food, gas, and fun money, and seeing the physical cash disappear made me stop buying random snacks at the checkout line. Has anyone else had a specific category where cash just works better for them?
