I would skip the tack cloth step before painting, figuring a fast air blow did the job. That idea fell apart when a coupe repair came back with a sandy clear coat. The whole fender needed redoing, costing me half a Saturday. These days, I drag the tack cloth over every inch, no matter how minor the fix.
