Stopped by a barber school in Nashville and saw something wild

I was in Nashville last weekend visiting a friend and figured I'd check out the barber school near his place. Walked in and there were like 6 students all working on mannequin heads but none of them were using any guards on their clippers. They were just freehand fading straight onto plastic heads with no real hair texture. The instructor told me they start everyone on plastic for 2 months before letting them touch a real person. I thought that was crazy honestly because plastic head and a real head feel completely different. I get practicing fundamentals but doesn't that setup bad habits? Has anyone else trained on plastic heads or did you go straight into working on people with supervision?

Question about how long pattern grading actually takes

I spent 5 hours last weekend trying to grade a simple dress pattern up just two sizes and I still messed up the armhole curve. I thought it would take maybe an hour tops since I've watched a bunch of tutorials. Turns out matching up the notches and keeping the proportions right is way harder than it looks on video. My test muslin came out with the sleeves pulling weird and the waistline sitting crooked. I ended up having to re-draw the whole thing from scratch using a different base block. Has anyone else found that grading takes them way longer than they expected or am I just missing some shortcut?

Old timer told me to stop fighting the seams

Had a 30 year vet named Mike watch me struggle with a seam iron at a job in Peoria. He pulled me aside and said 'you're pushing too hard, let the iron do the work.' Changed my whole approach. Anybody else get advice from an older installer that stuck with you?

Friend of a friend swore by password managers, but my dad's old method of sticky notes never failed him once in 30 years

I was at a BBQ in Austin last summer and this IT guy kept saying my dad's sticky note system was a security nightmare waiting to happen, but the dude had his whole digital life locked inside one app that got breached twice last year. Remember when we used to climb with just a flip line and a lanyard?

I was out on a big red oak removal in Cleveland last week and watched a new guy set up with a full SRT system. Made me think back to the early 2000s when I started, I had a simple flip line, a single lanyard, and a pair of spikes. No mechanical ascenders or fancy friction hitches. I can't say it was better, but I sure knew every knot by heart and didn't waste time fiddling with gear. Has anyone else noticed how the extra gear slows things down sometimes?

Hot take: I used to skip the first episode of every show, but a stranger at the laundromat changed my mind.

I was at the 24 hour laundromat near my place in Portland last Tuesday, folding socks and trying to decide what to watch next. This older guy next to me must have overheard me muttering about skipping episode 1 of The Americans because I hate slow starts. He looked at me and said, 'You're missing the point. Episode 1 is the thesis statement, everything else is just proof.' I thought he was being dramatic but I gave it a shot that night. Turns out he was right, that first episode set up character motivations I would have totally missed. Now I force myself to watch every pilot before deciding to bail. Has anyone else found a pilot that seemed boring but ended up being crucial later?

My 'vintage' paint can discovery after a messy afternoon

I spent three hours carefully painting a chair with this old, thick paint I got for $5, only for my neighbor to point out the can clearly said 'Exterior Only' in faded letters. Anyone have a good trick for stripping that off without buying more chemicals?

Saw a fleet shop in Tacoma using only one oil brand for everything, even old Detroit 2-strokes.

I mean, maybe it's just me but I think that's asking for trouble on engines with different needs. Has anyone else run into shops that do this?

Had a talk with a client in Denver that changed how I see my own work

She was an older lady who watched me run a new line to her living room and said, 'You know, you're not just giving me more channels. You're giving my grandkids a way to see me on video calls.' I'd never thought of the job that way before, just as pulling cable and hooking up boxes. Anyone else have a moment where a customer made you see your daily work in a new light?
