Just realized that IT guy was right about static IPs for cameras

My buddy Dave who runs a security install company in Austin told me last year I should set static IPs on my 8 outdoor cameras instead of using DHCP. I thought he was being overkill, until my router assigned a new IP to three cameras after a power outage and they all went offline. Spent a whole Sunday reconfiguring the NVR to find them again. Has anyone else had a similar situation where ignoring advice from a pro cost you a day of work?

My weird trick for fixing uneven hems with a coffee stirrer

I was working on a silk skirt last month and the hem kept coming out wavy no matter how many pins I used. Frustrated, I grabbed a plastic coffee stirrer from my cup holder and taped it along the seam allowance as a makeshift stabilizer. It actually kept the fabric from stretching while I sewed, and the hem came out perfectly straight on the first try. I've used it on three projects since then, even on stretchy knits, and it works better than the $15 stabilizer tape I bought. Has anyone else found random household items that save their butt in a pinch?

Found out that old thermal paste can actually turn into a hard crust that stops heat transfer completely

I was reading a post on a hardware forum last night and a guy showed a picture of a 5 year old CPU with paste that had basically turned to stone. Has anyone else pulled off a cooler and found that rock solid layer? How did you clean it off?

Debate: Paint it yourself or pay a shop for a cheap project car?

I'm at a crossroads with my 1992 Miata that I picked up for $800. The body is straight but the paint is sunbaked and peeling clear coat. I've been watching YouTube videos and I'm pretty sure I can rattle can it for about $100 with a weekend of work. But my buddy who did his own CRX says it looks like crap up close and he wishes he just saved up $500 for Maaco. I don't have $500 to blow right now but I also don't want to ruin the car's value if I ever sell. What did you guys do on your first budget paint job? Did the DIY route work out or did you regret it?

Hit 1,000 hours on a Dell laptop from 2012 last night

I've been using this old Latitude for work and light gaming since I got it used off Craigslist. Last night I was entering a moving estimate and noticed the uptime counter in the BIOS said 1,000 hours. That's like 41 straight days of this thing chugging along. Has anyone else checked their old hardware's run time and been surprised?

Dropped $150 on a content audit tool last month and it paid for itself in two weeks

I was spending way too long manually checking old blog posts for broken links and outdated info. The tool caught a bunch of stuff I would have missed, like a page that was ranking decent but had a 404 error in the middle. Has anyone else tried automated audits vs doing it by hand?

Had a client in Tulsa ask for a 'sunset' balayage and then bring in a picture of a literal fireball.

Spent two hours mixing custom colors, used a full tube of 8VR and half a tube of 7RR, trying to get that orange-to-red blend. She looked in the mirror and said, 'It's pretty, but where's the yellow part?' I had to explain that adding yellow to her dark brown base would make it look muddy, not like a sunset. Has anyone else had a client bring in a photo of something that's just not possible with hair color?
