I opened it up and the heat sink was completely clogged with what looked like pet hair and dust. He admitted he'd never cleaned it in the three years he owned it. What's the most surprising thing you've found inside a 'well-maintained' machine?

My old boss told me to always check the power strip first, and I finally saw why.

I was at a client's house in Tempe last Tuesday, looking at a desktop that wouldn't turn on. The guy was sure his power supply was fried. I was about to start pulling parts when I remembered what my first boss, Frank, always said. I got on the floor and followed the cord. It was plugged into a power strip under the desk, and the strip's switch was off. Flipped it, and the machine booted right up. Saved myself an hour of work. What's the silliest 'simple fix' advice that's actually saved your bacon?

A talk with my dad about his old Otis gearbox made me see things new

I was over at my parents' place last weekend, helping my dad clean out his garage. He was an elevator guy for 35 years before he retired. We found his old toolbox, and he pulled out this heavy, greasy gearbox from an Otis unit he worked on back in the 90s. He just held it and said, 'You know, I used to hate this part. Thought it was a pain. Now I miss the feel of it.' That hit me hard. I've been so focused on the new stuff, the computer codes and the fancy drives, that I kind of forgot about the simple, solid pieces that hold it all together. It made me appreciate the physical craft of it all over again. Made me want to get my hands dirty on the mechanical side more often. Do you guys ever get that feeling, where you realize you're taking the basic parts of the job for granted?

Finally got my A&P after failing the oral on hydraulics twice

I mean, I wasted like $400 on retake fees because I kept blanking on the reservoir pressurization section. Anyone else have a specific system that just wouldn't stick?

Tried putting a kiddie pool in the run for the heat wave

Filled it with just an inch of water and some ice cubes, thinking they'd wade. All three of my Orpingtons started drinking from it like a giant bowl and ignored their regular waterer for two days straight. Anyone else have their birds totally ignore the 'right' equipment for a simple fix?

My morning pour over turned into a total mess on Tuesday

I was rushing to get out the door and poured my water way too fast, basically flooding the grounds. The coffee tasted super bitter and weak at the same time, which I didn't think was possible. It ruined my whole morning vibe before a big meeting. What's your go-to method when you're in a hurry but still want a decent cup?
