Used to think those frozen pipe warnings were overblown until my kitchen sink split last January

I always rolled my eyes when the news would say drip your faucets during cold snaps. Figured it was just insurance companies being paranoid. Then we hit -12F in Cleveland last winter and the pipe under my sink literally burst at 3 AM. Water everywhere, had to rip out the cabinet and drywall. Now I tell everyone I know to just let that cold water trickle when temps drop below 20. Has anyone else had a close call with frozen pipes or am I the only one who learned the hard way?

Yeah @betty_scott18 no warning at all. I went to get a drink of water and turned the faucet and nothing came out then BAM the pipe split right under the sink. Learned my lesson the hard way so now I wrap the pipes with insulation foam and leave a tiny drip going whenever it gets real cold.

Did you have any clue it was coming, like weird sounds or a slow drip, or did it just go from fine to geyser?
