Question about handling forum moderation, the old way versus the new way

We ran our local car club forum for 6 years with a single volunteer mod and a few basic rules, but after switching to a team of 3 with a full written guide, we cut reported drama by like 80% in the first month alone.

Oh man, that 80% drop is exactly what we saw too. Having a written guide means you can just point someone to rule 4 instead of having a 20 minute argument about whether something was fair or not. And it protects the mods biggest time waster - I used to spend hours explaining the same judgement call to different people every week. Now I just paste the link and move on.

Totally, having that written guide is a game changer. Saw the same thing in my old gaming group, where clear rules just took all the personal heat off the mods.

That 80% drop in drama is huge. One thing I never see talked about is how a clear guide actually protects the mods themselves. It stops them from getting accused of playing favorites or making up rules on the spot, which can burn out volunteers fast.
