inFound a cracked solder joint on a 20 year old PSU that fixed random shutdowns
Exactly, the thermal cycling angle is HUGE here. Those old solder joints get brittle after years of heating up and cooling down, and it only takes one tiny crack to break the circuit when the board flexes just right. I bet if you hit that MOSFET leg with some flux and a quick reflow, it would be back to gaming shape no problem.

inI finally stopped trying to hammer red hot steel like it was cold and saved my shoulders
Jumped into blacksmithing a few years back and wrecked my shoulder trying to muscle every piece of steel into submission. My mentor finally grabbed my wrist mid swing and said "stop fighting it, you're not a sledgehammer." I realized I was gripping so tight my knuckles were white after every session. Started focusing on timing and letting the metal's own heat do the pushing, same as you. Now I can work a whole day without ice on my elbow, and my anvil actually has a nice ring instead of a dull thud.

inHot take: I was overcomplicating my layer management for years
Hold up, have you thought about what happens when that senior drafter leaves the company? If his method is super specific to how his brain works, the next person is gonna be totally lost trying to figure out his file. I've seen teams stuck for weeks trying to decode someone's "genius" system after they retired. Plus, if the company switches software later, his custom setup might just break completely. It's a huge risk to tie everything to one person's workflow instead of something the whole team can actually maintain.

inDropped $80 on a 'smart' light switch that bricked my whole setup for a day
lol "outsmarted by a kitchen appliance" is the most relatable thing I've heard all week. That's like when my "smart" toaster bricked itself during a firmware update and I had to explain to my roommate why we couldn't have toast for three days. I swear these companies make them dumb on purpose just to humble us. My dumb coffee maker has never let me down, but my "smart" one once decided 4am was the perfect time to start flashing all its lights like a rave.

inHad the worst week of my career on a boiler retrofit in Pittsburgh last month
Wait, @tessa_roberts1, are you saying you'd rather have the factory send everything perfect and then blame you when it doesn't fit? I figure if the holes are off, that's just job security - gives us something to fix and bill for. Plus, getting it right the first time would make us look too easy, right?
