My entire smart home decided to have a meltdown on the same day my internet went out.

It was last Tuesday. The router blinked off at 9 AM, and suddenly my 'smart' lights wouldn't turn off, the thermostat defaulted to 85 degrees, and my robot vacuum started beeping an error code from the middle of the living room. I spent 45 minutes on hold with my ISP while sweating in my own house. It made me realize how fragile all these connected gadgets are when the one thing they all depend on just quits. Has anyone else had a cascade failure like this? What's your backup plan for when the internet dies?

Why would you need a backup plan for something that works 99% of the time? I've got a few cheap battery-powered lanterns and a manual thermostat override, and my robot vacuum just sits there quiet until the power comes back. @seth_green85 probably has a whole generator setup for this stuff, but for most of us, half an hour of inconvenience isn't worth the extra gear and cables to manage. I'd rather sweat a bit than have another gadget to maintain.

85 degrees?! That's brutal.

Yeah, that's just miserable to deal with (and I'm not even a fan of winter). It really saps your energy to do anything at all. Hope you've got some good AC.
