That one time a client's cat knocked over a full can of stain on a finished oak table

After a full day of stripping and sanding, I'd just applied the final coat of tung oil to a 1920s oak table when the client's cat jumped up and sent a fresh can of dark walnut stain crashing across the perfect surface, so what's your best method for fixing a deep stain spill on a fresh finish without starting completely over?

How fresh was the tung oil finish when the spill happened? That really changes what you can do next.

My third cat-related disaster this year involved a tipped-over paint can.

Take what the_kelly said about timing seriously because a wet tung oil finish will actually absorb that walnut stain right into the wood grain making it impossible to sand out cleanly. If the oil was still tacky you need to wipe and reapply fast before it cures into the wood.
