I used to think it was fine to keep a lost wallet if there was no ID inside.
Found one in a cart at the Target in Bellingham last week, just cash and a couple gift cards. I was about to pocket the $40 when I saw a receipt with a phone number scribbled on the back. Called it, and the relief in the guy's voice made me feel awful for my first thought. When is it actually okay to keep found money, or is it never?

Turn it in if you can find the owner, always.

What if the owner's a jerk, @thead44?

But what if the thing is just a twenty dollar bill on the sidewalk with no wallet around? You're telling me I gotta go on a whole detective hunt for that? Sometimes the universe just gives you a little win. If someone drops their wallet with an ID, sure, try to get it back. But some stuff is basically finders keepers, and turning every single lost item into a moral test is just not how the real world works.
