Most dredge hands say heavy grease is best, but a thin coat stopped my swing gear from frying.

Had the same problem with my gear getting too hot until I tried a light grease coat. Too much grease can trap heat and cause friction burn. A thin spread lets it run cool all season.

Was my heavy hand the problem all along?

Is there a rule of thumb for how thin the grease layer should be? I read somewhere that if you can still see the metal texture, you're on the right track. Too much and it traps heat like a blanket, which might be what happened to @wright.cole. A mechanic told me it should look like a faint smear, not a full cover.
