Maybe it's just me but I think the whole 'single origin' thing is getting a bit overblown. Had a weirdly good week with a basic blend.

So last week, my espresso machine was down and I had to use my old drip pot at the shop. All I had left was this cheap grocery store blend, the kind that's like $8 for a big bag. I mean, I was expecting battery acid. But idk, maybe it was the weather or something, but it just tasted... solid? Like, not amazing, but honestly better than some $25 single-origin light roasts I've had that just taste sour. It made me think we get so caught up in the fancy labels we forget coffee is just supposed to be a good drink. Has anyone else had a moment where the simple stuff just hit right?

I was stuck on a chapter for weeks, but a friend convinced me to try a 15 minute sprint over video chat. I wrote 500 words without overthinking and it broke the block completely. Has anyone else found a specific method that seemed silly but actually works?

Finally pulled the trigger on a proper stump grinder rental

Had a big oak removal job in Springfield last week with a gnarly 40 inch stump left over. Renting a Vermeer SC252 for the day ran me about $350. I was sweating the cost, but it chewed through that thing in under two hours. My back is thanking me for not trying to do it by hand over a weekend. Anyone have a go-to rental spot they like better than the big national chains?

Am I the only one who sees people over-pruning young maples in spring?

I keep seeing crews in my town doing heavy crown reductions on young red maples right now. They're taking off way more than the recommended 25% of live foliage, often leaving these lollipop shapes. This stresses the tree right during its growth push and can lead to weak structure later. I learned this the hard way on a job six years ago when a client's maple we over-thinned got sunscald. What's your take on spring pruning limits for young shade trees?

I thought asking for a raise was a surefire way to get on my boss's bad side.

For years, I just kept my head down and hoped my work would be noticed. Then my friend, who works in tech, told me to write down every single thing I did that saved money or brought in new business. I did that for three months, made a list, and asked for a meeting. I was shocked when my boss said yes to a $2 an hour increase right then and there. Has anyone else had a good experience just by showing the numbers?

Hot take: I thought 3D printed props were just for cosplay, not real shoots.

I needed a broken radio for a scene and printed one on my Ender 3, then hit it with some spray paint and dirt. It looked so real on camera that the director asked where we rented it. Anyone have tips for making printed plastic feel heavier or more solid on set?

Had a beer with my retired neighbor who used to hang board in the 80s

He asked me how many screws I put in a 4x12 sheet. I said the usual, every 12 inches. He just shook his head and said, 'We did 8. Your arms would be noodles by Friday, but those walls never made a sound.' It got me thinking about all the callbacks I've had for nail pops. Maybe we're going too fast now. Anyone still using the old 8-inch spacing, or is that just crazy talk?

Hot take: My whole fade game changed when I stopped rushing the blend

I used to try and get a full skin fade done in about 15 minutes flat, just moving the clippers fast and hoping it looked smooth. About six months ago, a barber from Chicago told me to slow down and really feel the head shape with my free hand. Now I take at least 25 minutes, and I use my fingers to guide where I need to soften the lines before I even touch the clipper guard. The difference in how clean the blend looks is huge. Anyone else find that slowing down a bit actually made their cuts faster in the long run because you get fewer redos?

I ignored him for a year, filling pages with orphan origins and tragic pasts. My stories went nowhere until I tried his idea with a petty thief scared of open spaces. How do you all find that central flaw for a character?

Rant: A customer told me my sourdough crust was 'too hard to chew' and it changed my whole bake

I mean, I was proud of that crackly, dark crust, but a regular at my local market in Spokane said it hurt her jaw. She said it straight up, 'I love the flavor, but I can't eat it.' So I dropped my oven temp by 25 degrees and added a pan of water for the first 10 minutes. Now the crumb is just as open, but the crust is way more friendly. Has anyone else had to soften their style after getting that kind of blunt feedback?
