DAE get annoyed when book clubs pick books just for the hype?

In my book club, we used to always grab the latest bestseller off the shelf. It got boring fast because half of us didn't even finish them. I spoke up and said we should try older books that got ignored. We picked 'Stoner' by John Williams, and our talk was wild. People fought over if the main guy was a hero or just sad. Before, we just said nice things and moved on. Now, we have real fights and learn more. Skipping trendy books made our club way better.

What's the point of a book club if everyone just nods and says "yeah, it was good"? Picking the flavor-of-the-month bestseller means you get a flavor-of-the-month chat, which is basically just listing plot points. My old club would pick the big hype book and have the most painfully polite 20-minute talk ever. Choosing something nobody knew forced us to actually have opinions, and wow, turns out we all have them! It's way more fun to argue about a book than to politely agree it was "fine" while secretly hating it.

Seems like you're overthinking book club picks.
