Tried to fix a wobbly ceiling fan with a zip tie last week...

The fan in my bedroom was shaking, so I thought I could just tighten the mount with a zip tie instead of getting a new bracket. It held for about an hour before the whole thing came loose and now there's a big crack in the drywall. Has anyone else tried a quick fix that made things way worse?

Come on, a zip tie? That's asking for trouble. Drywall cracks are annoying but it's not a structural disaster, just a messy patch job. Next time just turn the thing off and get the right bracket.

You said it's not a structural disaster, but that crack might be a sign of a bigger problem. If the drywall is failing around the bracket, the whole fixture could come down later. A zip tie is a quick fix that ignores why the crack happened in the first place, right? What if the wall itself is weak there?

My garage light's been zip tied for three years.
