Thought I'd patch a drywall hole in 30 minutes, took me 3 days instead
I had this tiny hole from a doorknob in my hall wall, figured I'd slap some spackle on it and be done before dinner. Turned out the hole was bigger behind the paper than I thought, and I ended up having to cut out a whole square and tape a new piece in. Then the mud kept cracking because I didn't wait long enough between coats. By the time I sanded and painted, I had wasted a whole weekend on something I swore would be a quick fix. Has anyone else had a simple repair spiral into a full renovation?

Did your buddy end up having to go back to the store three times too, or was he smarter about it... My friend tried to fix a bathroom faucet drip and wound up gutting the whole vanity, had to call a plumber.

My brother tried to fix a leaky toilet handle once. Ended up taking the whole tank apart. Found a cracked float arm. Then he couldn't get the replacement part to fit. Three trips to the hardware store later, he just bought a whole new toilet. Said it was cheaper than his sanity.
