A client in Omaha told me his laptop was 'just slow' but it had a full 2.5 inches of dust clogging the fan.

I opened it up for a standard cleaning and found this solid mat of dust and pet hair blocking all the vents. He was genuinely shocked when I showed him the picture, saying he had no idea it could get that bad inside. Has anyone else had a simple 'clean my computer' job turn into a major dust excavation project?

Honestly, that six-month rule from @mason361 feels a bit extreme for most people. My own laptop goes years without being opened and it's never gotten that bad, so it really depends on your home environment. Some places just don't collect dust like others.

That's why I tell people to clean their laptops every six months.

My buddy had the same thing happen with his gaming PC last year. He kept complaining about it overheating and shutting down. When he finally opened it up, the dust was so thick it looked like gray carpet lining the whole bottom. He had to use a paintbrush and a vacuum to get it all out, it was wild. The thing ran like new after, he couldn't believe the difference. Makes you wonder what's hiding in all our machines lol.
